About Alden Briar

Hi — I’m Alden Briar, the person behind Outdoor Nookly. What started as one leaking preformed pond in a Southern California, USA backyard turned into 10 years of digging liners, rebuilding filter chambers, chasing string algae and learning koi behaviour the slow way.

I write the guides I wish I’d had at the beginning: no vague advice, no specs copied off a product page. If a pump is rated for 2,000 GPH, I want to know what it actually pushes through 15 feet of tubing and a two-foot head height — so I measure it.

How I test and review

1. Hands-on first. Products are installed in a working pond or garden, not judged from a listing. Where a unit can’t be bought, I say so plainly in the article.
2. Measured, not guessed. Flow rate, power draw, water clarity and noise are recorded with the same tools every time so results compare across reviews.
3. Run over a season. A filter that works in week one can clog by week eight. Long-term notes get added back into published guides.
4. Failures get published. If something cracked, leaked or underperformed, it stays in the review. That’s the useful part.
5. Updated with dates. Guides are re-checked when models change or get discontinued, and the update date is shown on the article.
